Staff development a priority at Springhill Care Home

on .

In order to ensure the highest standards of care and remain at the forefront of clinical innovation, Springhill Care Home considers the development of its staff as high priority.

Eight members of our care team are beginning a 15-month training course which will lead to the qualification of Assistant Practitioner.

The course will follow a curriculum which closely adheres to registered nurses in many areas, and will allow more flexibility, within their range of skills, to assist nurses closely with their work.

Theresa Swan, Learning and Development Manager at Springhill, said: “This exciting innovation will not only benefit the individual staff concerned in increasing their qualifications and experience, but will be a major contribution to the skills and development of all our staff.

“All staff learning is focused on the quality standards of care we deliver, and everything we undertake is designed to assist us with the increasing challenges for those who work in health and social care.

We wish our team all the best in their latest endeavour.

Residents praise us in national survey

on .

We’re celebrating at Springhill Care Home after scoring 100 per cent satisfaction from our residents for the standard of care we provide in a nationwide survey.

The results show that Springhill Care was given an overall performance rating (OPR) score of 882 out of 1,000, exceeding the national average of 872.

The home also exceeded the national average in 16 out of 23 criteria, and scored 100 per cent ratings in 11 of the criteria it was judged on as compared to eight areas at 100 per cent in the previous survey.

The areas of 100 per cent satisfaction included: safety and security; respect of privacy; taking part in activities; having visitors; cleanliness; being treated with kindness, dignity and respect; understanding staff and capability of staff.

Donna Briggs, Managing Director of Springhill Care Group, said: “It’s great that our residents value the care they receive and we believe it is part of our role to listen and understand their opinions and needs to ensure we are continually providing the very highest service levels.”

Now in its third year, the Your Care Rating survey is the country’s largest and most authoritative survey of care home residents. The nationwide survey gives residents a voice, putting their care at the heart of understanding more about how well care homes perform.

More than 21,000 residents in 1,034 care homes across the UK took part. Each care home was given an overall score based on resident feedback across four broad themes; Staff and Care, Home Comforts, Choice and Having a Say, and Quality of Life.

All of this year’s results for every care home surveyed are displayed on the Your Care Rating website www.yourcarerating.org.

Loyalty rewarded at Springhill Care Home

Adele Gibson

We always say ‘people are at the centre of everything we do’ – and that counts for our team of hard-working staff, too.

This sentiment was highlighted recently as we marked the anniversary of long-serving staff member Adele Gibson.

Originally employed as a kitchen assistant, Adele Gibson has been getting up at 4.30am, six days a week for 15 years in order to run the early breakfast shift, something valued by the extra early risers at Springhill.

Adele was presented with flowers by Springhill director Kath Parkinson, who said: “Adele Gibson has a hugely important role, assisting residents who prefer to wake up for breakfast a little earlier than conventional – even if it’s just for a cup of tea and a chat.

“With the changes seen at Springhill over the past 20 or so years along with the challenges faced by the care sector, long-service and loyalty is invaluable.”

Everyone at Springhill would like to say congratulations to Adele, and wish her many more years of happiness working as part of our team.

Springhill’s Robin scoops top award

on .

Congratulations to Robin Eddleston of Springhill Care Home who won a top award recently celebrating the best in the region’s care.

Robin won the Dementia Carer of the Year award at the North West heat of the Great British Care Awards, one of the industry’s top ceremonies.

We had a great night at the ceremony, held at the Palace Hotel in Manchester, and our colleagues from the Grafton Avenue team at Affinity Supporting People also won the Care Team award.

Along with the two wins for Robin and the Affinity team, four Springhill staff were also finalists – Jean Ali of Birch Green Care Home for the Good Nurse award, Sara Moss of Affinity for the Home Care Worker Award and both Ken Nolan, Springhill chairman and Donna Briggs, managing director, for the Care Employer of the Year award.

In total, forty of us from Affinity, Springhill Care Home and Birch Green Care Home attended, and Dom Dyer of the Grafton Avenue team had two reasons to celebrate – it was his birthday at the stroke of midnight, so celebrations continued.

Donna Briggs, Managing Director of Springhill Care Group, said: “Robin and the team at Affinity represent everything that is good about the care sector. They are hard working, passionate members of staff who put the people they care for and support first, and we are very lucky to have them as colleagues.

“We’re also really proud of our finalists – to even get to the finals of the Great British Care Awards is a great achievement as the competition was certainly fierce.”

Meanwhile, Jan Wilkins, general manager of Riversway Nursing Home in Bristol, also part of the Springhill Care Group, was recently named the Registered Manager of the Year at the South West heats of the same awards.

The Great British Care Awards is one of the industry’s leading award ceremonies, held as a series of regional events throughout England as a celebration of excellence. Winners of the regional awards go on to a national final.

We’ve now heard the great news that Robin has been shortlisted for the Dementia Carer Award as part of the North West heat.

Meanwhile, we are celebrating across the whole Springhill Care Group as we’ve had similar good news from all our homes and at Springhill HQ.

Affinity staff member Sara Moss is through to the final of the Home Care Worker Award, and a team of staff from Affinity have been picked as a finalist in the Care Team Award.

At Springhill HQ, chairman and founder Ken Nolan and managing director Donna Briggs have been shortlisted for the Care Employer Award. Jean Ali from Birch Green Care Home has been chosen as a finalist for The Good Nurse Award.

At Riversway Nursing Home, as part of the South West awards, Jan Wilkins has been shortlisted for the Care Home Registered Manager award; Terri Fisher and Matthew Reed for the Care Home Nutrition and Hydration award, and Rachel Smith for the Care Home Activity Organiser Award.

Donna Briggs said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to be recognised for even one award, so to see our staff shortlisted in all these categories is brilliant. We wish them all the best of luck.”

The South West awards take place on October 17, and the North West awards on November 1.
