Frank shares his hobby with us

on .

Recently Frank, one of our gentlemen who lives with us at Springhill Care Home proudly shared with our staff team and fellow residents the pictures he’s been working on and adding to his own art portfolio.

Frank told us that “until he came to Springhill Care Home he had never been interested in colouring, but now he loves it”.

Frank joins in with all our arts and craft activities as well as spending time alone to build up his portfolio.

Colouring can be very relaxing and therapeutic and it is also a “Being Mindful” activity which can be categorised as “Awareness” which is one of the five ways to personal wellbeing (see below).

Five ways to personal Wellbeing; (NHS Website)

1. Connect - connect with the people around you: your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Spend time developing these relationships.

2. Be active - you don't have to go to the gym. Take a walk, go cycling or play a game of football. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life.

3. Keep learning - learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and a new confidence. So why not sign up for that cooking course, start learning to play a musical instrument, or figure out how to fix your bike?

4. Give to others - even the smallest act can count, whether it's a smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering at your local community centre, can improve your mental wellbeing and help you build new social networks.

5. Be Mindful - be more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness "mindfulness". It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.

All aboard to Blackpool Zoo

on .

Last week we set off to explore the popular animal exhibits at Blackpool Zoo.

Visiting a zoo is a great experience and day out for everyone, and it can be very entertaining.  It certainly enhanced our resident’s knowledge about all the zoo animals and their rare species.

We particularly loved seeing the Gorilla Mountain exhibit - we got to see the big western lowland gorillas including Bukavu, a silverback and Milliki and her babies Meisie, Makari, Njema and Moanda.

We shared a lovely picnic and enjoyed ice creams in sunshine with the bird life all around us.  Andy named two of the birds Trevor and Derek!

We also took a small detour on the way home and we enjoyed a trip down the famous Blackpool promenade which bought back wonderful memories for everyone.

A fabulous day was had by all and we can't wait for our next outing!

#30DaysWild

on .

Recently we enjoyed a nature themed art session as part of our #30dayswild project and many of our residents thoroughly enjoy taking time together to be creative.

In this session a member of our Lifestyle team shared a Flower Fairies book which was full of beautiful illustrations and poetry.

Everyone agreed the session was very relaxing and enjoyable.

Zoolabs inspires at Springhill

on .

Springhill Care Home was visited by a range of creatures recently.

The home played host to a visit by the Zoolabs organisation, which brought along animals including a snail, frog, tortoise, rats, a tarantula and snake.

It was a thoroughly interesting afternoon and proved very popular, with residents given the chance to look at and handle the different creatures. One told us: “I love it when we get to come along and we learn something new as well.”

We’re all looking forward to Zoolab’s next visit in the Autumn.
