Raising dementia awareness at Springhill

on .

As part of a series of events to mark Dementia Awareness Week, Springhill Care home recently held a special party to help increase awareness of the condition.

A cake decorating competition worthy of the Great British Bake Off took place, there was a tasty buffet and we proudly unveiled the brand new terrace in our Treetops Suite.

Staff also found out exactly what it’s like to experience symptoms associated with dementia by participating in activities designed to simulate the condition.

This included wearing goggles and headphones to impair the senses and create confusion while carrying out everyday tasks, like pouring a drink and fastening buttons, and wearing latex gloves filled with popcorn kernels to mimic arthritis.

Fabulous prizes that were kindly donated by our local suppliers, community and friends of Springhill Care Home, were on offer on the raffle and tombola, raising £180 which we will be donating to the Alzheimer’s Society.

We’d like to thank everyone who helped make our party so special.

Blooming marvellous

on .

There’s no better way to liven up a room than with a beautiful bunch of flowers.

Thanks to a recent flower arranging session with a few of our ladies, we now have plenty of vases full of colourful decorations dotted around the lounges at Springhill Care Home.

We also had time to make some regal crowns ahead of the Royal Tea Party we’re planning for Queen’s 90th birthday.

Springhill staff are good sports

on .

In the name of charity, Springhill staff members took part in a very special sports day to help support Sport Relief.

Staff competed in several classic events everyone remembers from school, including the egg and spoon race, bean bag toss and the three legged race. A couple of our residents also joined in the fun.

Thanks to Joanna and Gail for organising a great day!

Reeling back the years at Springhill

on .

There was a wonderful trip down memory lane in store for Springhill residents recently when they were paid a visit by the Time Machine company.

A huge projector screen was set up and with tasty homemade popcorn on hand (it wouldn’t be a trip to the cinema without it!), residents settled down to enjoy classics from Laurel and Hardy and Morecambe and Wise.

An extra touch of nostalgia was provided via television adverts from the 1960s, as well as music courtesy of Frank Sinatra.

Thank you to the Time Machine company for providing us with a wonderful afternoon.

Dementia café serves up support

on .

Springhill Care Home is serving up regular support for the community on issues relating to dementia.

The Dementia Café initiative has been set up to provide information and advice for relatives and friends of our residents, as well as anyone wanting to learn more about the condition.

We will be welcoming people into the home on a monthly basis to discuss issues and share knowledge and experiences over a cup of tea or coffee.

Bernadette Bennett, service manager at Springhill, said: “We want people to know they don’t have to face the difficult challenges of dementia alone.

“By providing a place where people can come and share their experiences or learn more about the condition, we hope to create a network within a supportive environment which people can rely on.”

The term dementia describes a set of symptoms including memory loss, mood changes and difficulties communicating. It is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

Approximately 80 per cent of people living in care homes have a form of dementia. By 2025, it’s expected there will be one million people with the condition in the UK.

Nicky Cassidy from the Alzheimer’s Society attended the first meeting, which took place on January 27.
