Springhill gets ready for ‘Finding Ethel’

on

Springhill Care Home is launching a shared reading group focused on the life of a local author, poet and suffragette.

‘Finding Ethel’ will look at the life of Ethel Carnie Holdsworth, who was born in Oswaldtwistle and is now the subject of a Heritage Lottery Fund project. Unfortunately her work has been largely forgotten until recently, and Springhill is delighted to be involved in the efforts to raise the profile of this local legend.

Springhill’s reading group will follow the same format of the home’s existing ‘Get Into Reading’ group, a social inclusion project which aims to build community and improve mental health through the shared reading of good books and poems.

It is based on the work of The Reader Organisation at Liverpool University which runs similar groups. As part of this project, shared reader Janet Swan will bring Ethel’s stories to life in the sessions, starting on May 3 at 2pm.

All sessions will be led by Janet, who has been trained in the Get Into Reading approach and who has an MA in Reading in Practice.

Janet also has many years’ experience of working with groups either as a speech and language therapist, teacher or singing group leader.

There will be six sessions in total, held fortnightly. For more information please speak to Victoria Huntriss, Springhill’s wellbeing lead.
